Sunlight filtered through Dad’s old office window as I sorted through the files of the employees who wanted to terminate their contracts. Dad’s old desk was warm under my hand, and I stopped what I was doing every now and again to glance at the photograph of Dad and me.

Ultimately, he’d agree with what I was doing. Dad had always been fair with everyone who’d worked with him, and I needed to follow the same path.

Wes glanced up from his computer. “I’ve moved all of your appointments to this afternoon to buy you some extra time.”

“Thank you.” It was quite a relief that Wes was back in the office. It was far easier to communicate with him across a room rather than across a city, and I’d missed him being here with me. He made me laugh, and there was something about his manner that relaxed me. He rarely got flustered, or stressed, and it was good to have someone so unflappable working alongside me. As far as Wes was concerned, everything would always work out.

Apart from the occasional comments between us, however, we were both quiet this morning as we focused on our tasks.

Suddenly, he moved his chair. “That’s it! I can’t stand it anymore!”

I looked up at him, jarred by the interruption.

“You have to tell me what’s going on between you and Patrick!”

“What do you mean?” I’d already explained the bare bones of the arrangement to Wes and Charmaine. Surely he hadn’t forgotten?

“I don’t get why I’m still getting instructions from him I have to pass on to you, like orders from an alpha. Why isn’t he talking directly to you now?”

I paused and thought about it. In some ways, it was easier to have Wes as a buffer between Patrick and me. It meant that I got some mental space and kept my boundaries in place as much as I could. But Wes had asked a question and I needed to answer it — Patrick and I needed to look like we were engaged, after all.

“It’s kind of a long story. He’s dealing with a lot right now, but I feel like I understand some of what he wants to do with Apex moving forward.” I sat back in my seat, and it creaked with the movement of my weight. “I think last night was a big step — I learned a lot more about him. His desire to move Apex into philanthropy makes so much more sense now that I understand more of his background.”

“Oh?” Wes waited for me to tell him more. “And this is why I was sent to get you ready yesterday?”

“Yeah.” I nodded. “It’s all wrapped up with his parents and his relationship with them. His mom opens up their family home to shifters in need, and Patrick has grown up with that mindset. I know how much he respects April, and his dad…” I hesitated. This wasn’t all my story to tell. “Well, his dad is sick right now, so April has had her focus elsewhere.
